The French Ministry of Education proposes a PhD grant (3 years)
in the field of automatic structure elucidation of small organic molecules.

Post-Doctoral Position Amiens France

Post-Doctoral Position:

Structure of lignocellulose and its enzymatic hydrolysis: contribution of solid state NMR and electron microscopy.
This proposal is funded by the regional council of Picardie in the laboratory Génie Enzymatique et cellulaire - UMR 6022 CNRS-UPJV (Amiens)

The project lies in the development of second-generation biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels and the first-generation biofuels. The concept of second-generation biofuels, is based on valuing the entire plant by producing ethanol from the abundant ligno-cellulosic biomass. One of technological lock for the development of this renewable energy is the conversion of the insoluble fraction of cellulose into monosaccharides. The crystalline structure of insoluble cellulose seems to be responsible of the inefficiency of enzymes degradation. The successful candidate will study the three-dimensional organization by developing appropriate NMR solid-state experiments and microscopy observations in connection with the enzyme degradation.

NMR facilities include two 500 MHz and 300 MHz WB spectrometers (Bruker) equipped with solid probes (CP and HR-MAS). Scanning Electron Microscopy and AFM are also available..

Funding for this position is available from 01/11/2008, for up to two years
Post-doctoral salary will be around 2000 € per month

Postdoctoral Position in NMR quantum computing

The Department of Physics at the Technical University of Dortmund has an immediate opening in NMR quantum information processing.

The biomolecular NMR research group of Dr. Remco Sprangers at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen, Germany is looking for Master, Diploma and PhD Students.

We use modern NMR techniques that are able to study large macromolecular complexes (e.g. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17762877 and http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17237764)
and exploit these methods to obtain insight in the mechanisms behind mRNA decay. These decay pathways directly influences protein expression levels and underlie cellular processes ranging from the response to environmental signals to the development of multi-cellular organisms and cell-cell communication.

The Max Planck institute for developmental biology hosts 5 departments and 8 independent research groups that focus their research on Protein Evolution, Biochemistry, Genetics, Evolutionary Biology and Molecular Biology. To increase the strength of Structural Biology, 600 MHz and 800 MHz NMR spectrometers and an in house X-ray source and crystallization robot were recently installed. The broad background of the institute offers the possibility to complement NMR studies with bio-informatics, microscopy and/or in-vivo studies. In addition, students are offered interdisciplinary practical and theoretical training, particularly through common introductory courses, symposia and research seminars. The majority of students coming to the institutes are funded by Max Planck Scholarships and the typical duration of a PhD thesis at the MPI for Developmental Biology is 3 - 4 years.

Postdoc in solid-state NMR of pharmaceuticals at Durham (UK) (update)

As a result of the imminent departure of the current position holder for a permanent position, the Durham Solid-State NMR group expects a postdoctoral vacancy of about 12 months (depending on appointment level) to be available from April.

The project ("Elucidating structure and dynamics in pharmaceutical solvates") essentially is show-casing the power of modern solid-state NMR to obtained detailed information about local structure and dynamics in complex materials of technological importance, and connects with innovative work in the group using molecular dynamics to relate molecular-level detail to bulk properties. A set of interesting systems (both from the NMR and applications viewpoint) has already been identified in the initial phase of the project. Since the systems are now familiar, the project is quite suitable for newly-qualified spectroscopists wishing to gain further experience in solid-state NMR, contacts with the pharmaceutical industry, and with specialist DFT-based code for calculating NMR parameters in solids (CASTEP). But the project also offers opportunities for more experienced researchers to devise novel techniques for the characterisation of locally dynamic materials.

Postdoc SSNMR Leiden

The Solid-state NMR group of the Leiden Institute of Chemistry invites applications for a

Postdoc position (1 year till 2 years).

Founded by the Volkswagen-Stiftung, within a research network coordinated by the Max-Planck-Institut für Bioanorganische Chemie in Mülheim, we aim to study the mechanism of photoisomerisation and signal transduction in the plant photoreceptor phytochrome.

The solid-state NMR group in Leiden provides a comprehensive infrastructure including various fields (2.3 to 17.6 Tesla WB), MRI, facilities for illumination in the magnet and for low temperature experiments.

Interested candidates should have a strong background in solid-state NMR, interest on material science and the ability to work independently within the network.

Solide Erfahrung auf den Gebieten der hochauflösenden NMR-Spektroskopie komplexer organischer/anorganischer Moleküle bzw. metallorganischer Verbindungen, der Anwendung moderner NMR-Methoden auf mechanistische Fragestellungen sowie im Bereich Automatisierung wird vorausgesetzt. Neuesten technischen und methodischen Entwicklungen soll durch Teilnahme an internationalen Kooperationen Rechnung getragen werden. Selbstständige Forschungs- und Entwicklungstätigkeit ist erwünscht.
Im Bereich der Personalführung wird kooperativer Umgang und fachliche Anleitung der Angestellten der Abteilung erwartet.
Die Stelle ist mit einer Lehrverpflichtung im Umfang von zur Zeit 9 Semesterwochenstunden (theoretische und praktische Ausbildung im Bereich NMR-Spektroskopie) verbunden.

NMR Applications Specialist

The College of Chemistry at University of California, Berkeley seeks an
Applications Specialist for its NMR facility. The facility currently houses
five NMR spectrometers (two 500, two 400, and one 300 MHz instruments) and
several workstations; a 600 MHz instrument will be installed later this year.

Primary responsibility is to provide comprehensive NMR spectroscopy support
and user training to approximately 350 users with varying needs and diverse
research efforts. Additional duties include assisting with upgrades, writing
proposals for new instrumentation, assisting technical staff with spectrometer
maintenance, and performing administrative duties. Research opportunities
will be available and are actively encouraged.

Required qualifications: Ph.D. and 1+ yrs. experience in NMR; strong
background in liquids (and, ideally, solids) NMR using Bruker and/or Varian
instruments; solid understanding of NMR hardware and software technology,
design, and application of complex pulse experiments; experience in structural
and conformational analysis. Basic UNIX, C, Perl, Tcl/Tk and CGI background a
plus. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
