Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Associate position at the Center for Biomedical Imaging of the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, in the area of Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy.
Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance (MR) is a revolutionary and promising technique with a proven potential in biomedicine. Based on Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP), a low-temperature technique used to increase the nuclear spin order, hyperpolarization leads to an improvement in signal-to-noise ratio on the order of 10’000 times. It allows for the detection of tiny amounts of biological substances in vivo and to follow the metabolic pathways of chosen molecules.
Unique hyperpolarizers have been developed within the Swiss DNP Initiative regrouping several departments of the EPFL and the Paul Scherrer Institute. The Center for Biomedical Imaging (CIBM) provides access to two high-field animal MRI systems, one working at 9.4T and the other at 14.1T. One 5T hyperpolarizer is coupled to the 9.4T scanner and another is about to be installed and coupled to the 14.1T scanner.
The selected candidate will be involved in the development of new technologies and protocols to perform in vivo cardiac and brain DNP-enhanced experiments. Emphasis will be put on the use of novel hyperpolarized substrates for metabolic and molecular imaging. Applications in the field of cardiology and oncology will be tested on rodents.
We are seeking for a candidate with a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Biomedical engineering or related field. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in MR physics from his or her Ph.D. Experience with Varian sequence programming is desirable but is not required. The selected candidate will be part of a team composed of several PhD students and experienced researchers involved in the physical, chemical, biological and biomedical aspects of hyperpolarized MR.

A PhD student project/position is available in the area of NMR applied to asymmetric homogeneous catalysis. The project will be jointly supervised in the NMR Department (Dr. Christophe Farès) and in the Department of Homogeneous Catalysis (Prof. Benjamin List) of the MPI for Coal Research in Mülheim an der Ruhr (http://www.kofo.mpg.de/).
The specific goals are to address fundamental questions related to the mechanism of the high stereoselectivity in novel organocatalysts developed at this institute and to discover and develop new strategies towards the characterization of catalytic intermediate and transition states based on advanced NMR methods.
The PhD student will work in collaboration with synthetic chemists in order to optimize compounds which will stabilize intermediate states. She/He will also have full access to a modern NMR laboratory, equipped with seven spectrometers, including a 600-MHz instrument with a cryogenically cooled-probehead.
The position is for a period of three years. We are looking for a talented and motivated individual with a good background in NMR, that wish to invest time and energy to satisfy their curiosity in understanding the fundamental mechanisms behind organocatalysis. A genuine interest in interdisciplinary science will be essential. Education in a relevant discipline such as organic chemistry will be an advantage.

We have an opportunity for a highly talented Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Protein NMR Group in the Structural Biology Department at Genentech. Our research encompasses the structural analysis of proteins of therapeutic interest, with an emphasis on determining their conformations and ligand-binding properties.

The NMR facility is localized at two different sites and will get very soon a complete system to perform solid-state high-resolution NMR coupled to Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP).
Applications fields in high-resolution solid-state NMR at CEA-Grenoble are very broad, ranging from synthetic polymers to biological material, as well as new materials for nanotechnologies. Research at LRM includes methodological developments (pulse sequence design, DNP, NMR/DFT coupling, …) and original instrumentation in order to improve the low intrinsic sensitivity of NMR.
The successful candidate will be in charge of the maintenance and troubleshooting of the spectrometers, contact with suppliers, spectrometer time schedule, supervising external users, and users training. The candidate will be strongly involved in the setup of DNP/NMR experiments, including optimization of sample-preparation protocols for DNP.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in NMR Methods to Study Molecules of Environmental and Biological Interest

Job Description:
A 1-year postdoctoral position is available starting from May 2011, (extendable for additional 7 months) to study the “solid structure” of ionic liquids (ILs) with relevance to the pharmaceutical industry. For this purpose solid-state NMR will be used to study selected ionic solids (ISs). The research will be centered in the use of NMR techniques in tandem with molecular modelling to study the physical chemistry of molecular interactions in ILs and ISs.
This project will be performed at the NMR centers at the Universities of Aveiro (solids NMR) and Nova de Lisboa (liquids NMR).
Multinuclear liquid-state NMR experiments (including diffusion NMR experiments) will be employed to study ILs. This project will have a strong emphasis in the study of ISs, with low melting points, using advanced high-resolution multinuclear solid-state NMR methods. These studies will be complemented with first principles calculation of NMR parameters and molecular dynamics simulations. In a later stage the solvation of different molecules of pharmaceutical interest in biocompatible ILs will be addressed.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a challenging environment with access to state-of-the-art NMR equipment. Candidate Profile:
- The candidate should hold a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Physical Chemistry, Materials Sciences or related disciplines.

- Good informatics skills and experience with molecular modelling calculations is highly appreciated.
- Candidates with previous experience in NMR studies, considering this project research topic, are also of our interest.

Job Description:
A 1-year postdoctoral position is available starting from May 2011, (extendable for additional 7 months) to study the “solid structure” of ionic liquids (ILs) with relevance to the pharmaceutical industry. For this purpose solid-state NMR will be used to study selected ionic solids (ISs). The research will be centered in the use of NMR techniques in tandem with molecular modelling to study the physical chemistry of molecular interactions in ILs and ISs.
This project will be performed at the NMR centers at the Universities of Aveiro (solids NMR) and Nova de Lisboa (liquids NMR).
Multinuclear liquid-state NMR experiments (including diffusion NMR experiments) will be employed to study ILs. This project will have a strong emphasis in the study of ISs, with low melting points, using advanced high-resolution multinuclear solid-state NMR methods. These studies will be complemented with first principles calculation of NMR parameters and molecular dynamics simulations. In a later stage the solvation of different molecules of pharmaceutical interest in biocompatible ILs will be addressed.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a challenging environment with access to state-of-the-art NMR equipment. Aveiro is a very pleasant city near the seacoast, located between Porto and Lisbon with everything within walking distance.
Equipment: The candidate will have access to all equipments within the Portuguese NMR network (http://ptnmr.dq.ua.pt) ranging from 400 MHz to 800 MHz solid-state and solution NMR spectrometers with a variety of probes and other accessories for solids and liquids and will have access also to a shared computer cluster (http:// http://wikis.ua.pt/flamingo/). Both institutes are well equipped with 6 BRUKER AVANCE III NMR (400 to 600 MHz) spectrometers equipped with more than 20 probes. Details may be found in the aforementioned link.
Duration: 12 months extendable to 19 months, preferably from May 2011.
Candidate Profile:
- The candidate should hold a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Physical Chemistry, Materials Sciences or related disciplines.
- Previous experience in solid-state NMR spectroscopy (instrumentation and theory) is required.
- Good informatics skills and experience with molecular modelling calculations is highly appreciated.
- Candidates with previous experience in NMR studies, considering this project research topic, are also of our interest.

- Past experience in NMR spectroscopy, with preference for those candidates with experience in solids NMR is required.
- Analysis of relevant publications of interest for this project.
2- Interview if necessary, where proof of knowledge is tested.

A permanent professor position is available at the University of Rennes 1 (Pharmaceutical and biological sciences faculty and LTSI) in september 2011.
Teaching
The Professor will be in charge of the education department of Mathematics and Physics pharmaceuticals. She/He will teach Mathematics, Statistics, Physics and Informatics in different levels of the curriculum of Pharmacy and Nutraceutical Engineering. She/He will be responsible for the development of innovative teaching at the interface between different disciplines.
Research
The research project focuses on methodological and technological developments in the domain of quantification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy (MRI, MRS), including an important translational component.
This professor position is attached to the Laboratory of Signal Processing and Image (LTSI, UMR INSERM 642), in the emerging team METRIQ currently made up of 1 full professor, 5 associate professor, 1 researcher, 4 PhD students and 1 technician. The Professor, by his/her experience, will be more particularly brought to reinforce and instigate research topics recently initiated by the team including methodological (physical, information processing) and technological aspects (electronic sensors, computer engineering) of MRI / MRS. One goal is to bring the innovations within the clinical team on the field. To do this, the local environment is particularly favorable: the team is the “support”, with a dedicated research engineer, of the small animal imaging component of the PRISM* platform, while having access to MRI of Rennes University Hospital (a 1.5 T and a 3 T clinical systems, and a 3 T with 50% time dedicated for research).She/He will be brought to work closely with, biologists, pharmacists and physicians.
* The PRISM platform gathers several imaging facilites on three sites :
- Beauregard (Cemagref) : 1 whole body MRI (0.2 T and 1.5 T)
- Villejean (UR1 IFR 140) : small animal MRI 4.7 T, 2 vertical 500MHz NMR spectrometers
- Saint-Gilles (INRA) : CT-scan, US, γ-scintigraphy and PET scan

NMR: Metabolomics or Structural Biology
The CSPBAT (Chemistry, Structure, and Properties of Biomaterials and Therapeutic Agents) laboratory, UMR CNRS 7244, was created in January of 2009 to regroup several research teams affiliated to the Paris 13 University that previously belonged to other laboratories in the Paris area (Ile de France). The SBMB team is a multi-disciplinary group that uses various spectroscopic methods to study biomolecules and biological samples (liquids, cells, and tissues).
Research profile: This Professorship position is open to candidates with a research program centered on one of the themes developed by the SBMB team of the CSPBAT laboratory:
Metabolomics based on NMR spectroscopy: The approach has been developed in our laboratory over the past ten years through collaborations with the nearby hospital research groups. The major themes involve exploration of kidney function, liver function, and cancer. The metabolomic studies will be conducted in the SMBH medical Faculty and will fall within the scope of the scientific interests of the medical staffs of Jean Verdier and Avicennes Hospitals.
NMR Structural studies on model systems in vitro: Another group in the SBMB team develops research in the field of DNA-protein interactions, particularly involving DNA aptamers. The goal is to improve the affinity or specificity of the aptamers for their targets (proteins, antibiotics, RNA or DNA structural motifs) to develop therapeutic or diagnostic tools.
New research projects in collaboration with the other teams in the laboratory would be considered, in particular projects concerned with the development of bio-captors or polymer-based biomaterials with biological activity.
Teaching profile:
General teaching in the field of Chemistry and/or Biology (undergraduate level). NMR and its applications in the field of public health (Masters level).
The laboratory is located at UFR SMBH in Bobigny.

Professorship
We are looking to recruit a ‚young’ talent (age 35-40) for a professorship in chemistry / physical chemistry at the University of Strasbourg, one of the best French research institutions in sciences. The candidate should be an expert in solution NMR spectroscopy and in the physical chemistry of molecular systems in solution. She/He should develop independent research on complex molecular systems. Ideally static or dynamic mixtures should be investigated using NMR spectroscopy under consideration of the thermodynamics and kinetics of such systems.
